AMD to invest $400 million in India by 2028: Here’s what we know

US chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices said on Friday it will invest around $400 million in India over the next five years and will build its largest design center in the tech hub of Bengaluru. AMD’s announcement was made by its Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster at an annual semiconductor conference that started Friday in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat. Other speakers at the flagship event include Foxconn Chairman Young Liu and Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. Despite being a late entrant, the Modi government has been courting investments into India’s nascent chip sector to establish its credentials as a chipmaking hub. AMD said it will open its new design centre campus in Bengaluru by end of this year and create 3,000 new engineering roles within five years. “Our India teams will continue to play a pivotal role in delivering the high-performance and adaptive solutions that support AMD customers worldwide,” Papermaster said. MediaTek Dimensity 7200 announced for mid-range Android smartphones: Check specs, availability

MediaTek has been steadily expanding its chipset lineup with Dimensity-series system-on-chips (SoC). Back in November last year, the company launched its flagship Dimensity 9200 SoC for premium smartphones. It was followed by the launch of the Dimensity 8200 in December 2022. Now, just a few months later, the company has added another system-on-chip in its Dimensity lineup. The company today announced the launch of the MediaTek Dimensity 7200. It is MediaTek’s first chipset in its Dimensity 7000 series and it will be powering the next-generation of mid-range Android smartphones.

MediaTek Dimensity 7200: Specifications and features

Coming to the specifications, the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 has been made using the 4nm fabrication process. It features two Cortex-A715 cores with a frequency of 2.8GHz and six Cortex-A510 cores. It also has Mali G610 MC4 GPU. It also has MediaTek’s HyperEngine 5.0 technology for gaming.

The Dimensity 7200 offers support for UFS 3.1 storage and RAM running at up to 6,400Mbps (LPDDR5).

For connectivity, the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 chipset offers up to 4.7Gbps downlink speed, dual 5G SIM, dual VoNR for calling, 2CC carrier aggregation and the company’s 5G UltraSave 2.0 technology. It also features support for Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and MediaTek’s Wi-Fi/Bluetooth co-existence technology.

Coming to the display, the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 offers 4K HDR video capturing capabilities, dual video capture feature, motion compensated noise reduction and all-pixel autofocus. Additionally, it offers up to full HD+ resolution at a screen refresh rate of up to 144Hz, and support for various HDR standards, which inclides HDR 10+, CUVA HDR and Dolby HDR among others.

Apart from these, the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 also has several high-end features and technologies including the MediaTek MiraVision 765 for videos and display, MediaTek Imagiq 765 HDR-ISP, MediaTek APU 650 and 3GPP R16 5G modem.

Perhaps, one of the most defining features of this chipset is its fabrication process. MediaTek, as mentioned before, has used 4nm process in this chipset, which is reserved mostly for flagship chipsets. This makes Dimensity 7200 more efficient than other SoCs in its league.

MediaTek Dimensity 7200: Availability

As far as availability is concerned, devices powered by the Dimensity 7200 will be available in market in the first quarter of 2023. With MWC 2023 coming up later this month, it is possible that we will hear about some of the Dimensity 7200 devices soon.
