AMD to invest $400 million in India by 2028: Here’s what we know

US chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices said on Friday it will invest around $400 million in India over the next five years and will build its largest design center in the tech hub of Bengaluru. AMD’s announcement was made by its Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster at an annual semiconductor conference that started Friday in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat. Other speakers at the flagship event include Foxconn Chairman Young Liu and Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. Despite being a late entrant, the Modi government has been courting investments into India’s nascent chip sector to establish its credentials as a chipmaking hub. AMD said it will open its new design centre campus in Bengaluru by end of this year and create 3,000 new engineering roles within five years. “Our India teams will continue to play a pivotal role in delivering the high-performance and adaptive solutions that support AMD customers worldwide,” Papermaster said. Redmi A2, Redmi A2 Plus may be coming soon to India

Redmi may be planning to launch two new entry-level smartphones in India. These are the Redmi A2 and the Redmi A2 Plus. The names of the upcoming Redmi phones suggest they are successors to the Redmi A1 and Redmi A1 Plus that were launched in India last year. Both Redmi A2 and Redmi A2 Plus have reportedly been spotted on the website of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

According to tipster Mukul Sharma, Redmi has applied for the BIS certification for its two upcoming smartphones, the A2 and the A2 Plus. The listings of both phones on the website confirm the names, but the specifications or features are unclear. Anyway, the fact that the phones have been listed on the BIS website confirm that the launch of the Redmi A2 and Redmi A2 Plus is imminent.

While the details on the Redmi A2 and Redmi A2 Plus are not clear, we can assume that both phones will come with upgrades over the Redmi A1 and Redmi A1 Plus. That means you are looking at phones that will pack slightly, if not more, powerful specifications than these:

The Redmi A1 sports a 6.52-inch HD+ “scratch-resistant” display with a resolution of 1600×720 pixels and a peak brightness of 400 nits. It is powered by the MediaTek Helio A22 chipset that is coupled with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space. It runs Android 12 Go Edition. On the camera front, the Redmi A1 has an 8-megapixel dual AI camera at the back and a 5-megapixel selfie camera. It is backed by a 5,000mAh battery with 10W fast charging support. Additional features include dual SIM card support and dual 4G support.

The Redmi A1 Plus, on the other hand, comes with a 6.52-inch LCD with a resolution of 1600×720 pixels and a 60Hz refresh rate. It also comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The smartphone is powered by MediaTek HelioA22 chipset and offer 3GB RAM and up to 64GB of internal storage. It runs on Android 12. For photography, the smartphone features a dual rear camera setup that houses an 8-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. For selfies and video calls, the smartphone comes with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The phone has a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 10W charging technology.
