AMD to invest $400 million in India by 2028: Here’s what we know

US chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices said on Friday it will invest around $400 million in India over the next five years and will build its largest design center in the tech hub of Bengaluru. AMD’s announcement was made by its Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster at an annual semiconductor conference that started Friday in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat. Other speakers at the flagship event include Foxconn Chairman Young Liu and Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. Despite being a late entrant, the Modi government has been courting investments into India’s nascent chip sector to establish its credentials as a chipmaking hub. Oppo Reno 9 Pro+ to run Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip

Oppo has confirmed that its upcoming Reno 9 Pro+ smartphone will sport the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Qualcomm’s flagship processor for this year. In a post on Weibo, the smartphone brand confirmed that one of the phones in the next Reno series will offer a flagship-level performance. While Oppo has not specified what phone it will be, it will likely be the top model, the Reno 9 Pro+. Apart from this phone, the series will include two more phones.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor was launched earlier this year as a slightly bumped-up version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which was launched last year in December as the processor for 2022’s flagship Android phones. Qualcomm recently unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, so while that snatches away the title of a flagship processor from the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the performance of the latter is only slightly lower.

Oppo Reno 9 series specifications

Not just the processor, Oppo also revealed that the phone with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor will use 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS3.1 storage. But you can expect the phone to come in more RAM and storage variants. The company also revealed that the Oppo Reno 9 series will run Android 13-based ColorOS 13 software. Since these phones will launch in China, some features will be exclusively available to users there. However, the Indian variants of the Reno 9 series are expected to come with India-specific features.

Apart from what Oppo has confirmed, the details of the upcoming Reno 9 Pro were revealed through a listing on China’s TENAA certification website. The phone will come with a 6.7-inch display with up to a 120Hz refresh rate. Powering this phone will be a MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max processor. The phone may come with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of inbuilt storage. The Reno 9 Pro may come with a 4390mAh battery with support for fast charging. The cameras on the back of the phone may sport a 50-megapixel main camera and an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera. On the front, the phone may feature a 32-megapixel camera inside a punch-hole design.

Oppo will launch the Reno 9 series on November 24.
