AMD to invest $400 million in India by 2028: Here’s what we know

US chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices said on Friday it will invest around $400 million in India over the next five years and will build its largest design center in the tech hub of Bengaluru. AMD’s announcement was made by its Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster at an annual semiconductor conference that started Friday in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat. Other speakers at the flagship event include Foxconn Chairman Young Liu and Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. Despite being a late entrant, the Modi government has been courting investments into India’s nascent chip sector to establish its credentials as a chipmaking hub. AMD said it will open its new design centre campus in Bengaluru by end of this year and create 3,000 new engineering roles within five years. “Our India teams will continue to play a pivotal role in delivering the high-performance and adaptive solutions that support AMD customers worldwide,” Papermaster said. Apple Watch Pro leaked cases and drawings hint at bigger display, extra button

Apple’s Fall Out event, which will be its biggest this year, is scheduled for September 7. Several leaks and rumours have pointed out that Apple will launch a slew of new hardware tomorrow. Of course, there will be new iPhones, but Apple, for the first time, may introduce a new Apple Watch Pro. Now, alleged photos of CAD drawings for the upcoming Apple Watch Pro have emerged and, according to them, the Pro watch will have a bigger display and an extra button.

91Mobiles has released CAD renders of the Apple Watch Pro, showing that there will be an entirely flat display unlike the previous generation Apple Watch models. The speaker cutout also looks redesigned and just below it is a new button, the purpose of which is unclear right now. The Digital Crown looks sharper than what we have seen on existing models. It is housed inside a slab sticking out of the right frame. The slab also houses the multitasking button and the microphone.

‘Indeed true’

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman corroborated that the CAD drawings are “indeed it.” If this is what the Apple Watch Pro would end up looking like, it is a treat for even a larger section of users, especially athletes and sportspeople who need bigger displays in all kinds of conditions, bigger buttons that are easy to grab, and something that could prevent accidental button triggers. Another leak that shows the third-party cases for the Apple Watch Pro also corroborates the drawings.

91Mobiles said the Apple Watch would be available in a 49mm size, which is significantly bigger than the largest 44mm size of existing regular Apple Watch models. Gurman also previously said that the Watch Pro will use a larger display and a larger battery. Everything larger would obviously need a larger body. A larger body would also need better waterproofing, but there is no information about that. Apple’s existing WR50 waterproofing standard is ideal for swimming in shallow water, not for activities such as kitesurfing or scuba diving.

And since we are throwing in what we want the Apple Watch Pro to bring, why not advanced features such as satellite connectivity besides cellular and GPS support? I think the Apple Watch Pro would then live up to that name truly. We will find out more about that at tomorrow’s event.
